Some Updates

More pictures and stories will be posted this weekend (hopefully), but we returned to MD on my birthday (August 17th) and had a fabulous time in Oregon. So strange getting settled back into the routine of real life! Randy and I are now both a year older. Randy started teaching again on Wednesday, and I'll have to tell you a story about that! Danny will start back to school after we return from California (the 10th). And Annelise is just Annelise (huggable and lovable... and starting to test limits!). This is Danny's birthday weekend, so we have parties, festivals and socializing to do!

Our desktop computer is FINALLY up and running (thank you Randy for those hours on the phone), so I even have old pictures to post over the next weeks! I also have been spending more time on the Internet, which has gotten me into some time-wasting trouble, including starting up a new blog about cute things that I find or have. I titled it these pretty things, so make sure you check it out.

That is the update, and you'll hear more soon (yes, I did prioritize the Indigo Girls post because I was desperately afraid I would forget some fun details, and I'm still on a bit of a high from the whole experience!).

A Night With the Girls

Randy and I had a special evening with two of our favorite girls:

... and thousands of screaming fans (also mostly girls)! On Sunday, August 26th, the Indigo Girls played at the Wolf Trap in Virginia, and Randy and I had a date.

We had been planning the event since May, so it was a very exciting evening for us. It was our third Indigo Girls concert, the first being at the Greek in Berkeley in the summer of 1996 and the second was at the Wiltern Theater in L.A. in 2000 (I think spring). Of course this was the first concert where we have had to hire a babysitter and pay as much for the babysitting as we did for the tickets! Good thing it was our birthday splurge!

The Wolf Trap is an amazing venue with nice pavilion seating (seats under a roof) and a huge lawn (where we spread out!). It is the National Amphitheater, so it is also considered a National Park. You can bring all your own food and drinks in, including alcoholic beverages. It was pretty impressive looking at some of the spreads the people had around us (including a woman mixing margaritas in front of us!).

The concert did not disappoint! The set list was well-rounded and included all of my favorite concert hits, plus some songs off their newer album. The opening act was Girlyman, and they were great, too. It was an absolutely beautiful night under the sky and lightning (no stars, but no rain, either!).

I was introduced to the Indigo Girls' music my freshman year of college by two (oh so wise and experienced) girls on my floor. They were juniors, had just spent the semester abroad, and had gone to a concert while out of the country. Totally amazing that while attending a conservative Christian University, I would get introduced to a lesbian rock/folk group that is so politically active (read... very left). Of course my politics have progressively moved that way over the years, and I have always appreciated the great things Amy and Emily are doing and the things they stand for. And their music... so insightful and singable!

City Kids at the Country Fair

Well, maybe I flatter ourselves... suburb kids at the country fair might be more accurate! Hood River has the greatest little county fair. Danny and Annelise enjoyed the exotic animals exhibit, which included many reptiles (including monitors and a small alligator) and some mammals, too, like the coatimundi and an African porcupine. The special treat though, were the farm animals. Of course Annelise pointed at all the furry ones and said "da-yee" (doggy). The 4 week old piglets were cute, and we were entertained for a good 30 minutes watching the 4-H kids bathe their animals (including an especially squealy hog). Danny got to hold an award winning chicken... he was a bit nervous. Randy and Danny also went on a couple of tame fair rides. A great afternoon! In these pictures you can see Danny's new, short summer haircut. Also there is a picture of the 4-H girl teaching Danny how to hold the chicken (we snapped a pic of him holding the chicken by himself, but it didn't come out).

Outdoor Fun

Here are some pictures of the kids at my parents' house. As you can see, Annelise loves running around just as much as Danny! (If you are wondering about Danny's face, we had been to the Portland Children's Museum that day, and he painted his face much like this.)

Annelise and Mollie

Annelise loves dogs, and anytime she sees one she yelps and points (and says, "da-yee"). Of course it is thrilling to her to be able to spend so much time with my parents' dog, Mollie. Here are a few pictures of Miss A and Mollie.

Playing in the Park

While in Hood River, we have had lots of opportunities to play outside. It has been cooler here than in Maryland, and the kids have loved being outdoors!

July 4th Visitors

As I mentioned earlier, Nancy and David Felch came to visit for the 4th of July holiday. Here are some pictures from the trip to Port Discovery in Baltimore. The kids spent a lot of time in the building section, which was great for the adults because we could sit and supervise (talk). Annelise loves the construction hats (actually, she loves any accessories!). David liked making noise with the sticks, while Danny kept busy building things.

Brother and Sister Pics

I was trying to get a decent shot of the kids together (a near impossible feat), so I ended up with 20 or 30 shots of the kids. Here are a few of the acceptable ones... it does make me feel thankful that 1) I am only photographing 2 kids and 2) this is the age of the digital camera (isn't technology wonderful?).

The National Zoo

... on a very hot, humid day!

Annelise looks huge in these stroller pictures, but she was just grumpy and slouched! We had a great time looking at the Pandas and the small mammal house. It was pretty crowded because we went on the weekend in the summer, but we still had a lot of fun!

Father's Day

I have some cute pictures from Father's Day, so, as promised I decided to go back in time to let you all see them! The kids loved looking at the fountains outside of the National Gallery.
