A Night With the Girls

Randy and I had a special evening with two of our favorite girls:

... and thousands of screaming fans (also mostly girls)! On Sunday, August 26th, the Indigo Girls played at the Wolf Trap in Virginia, and Randy and I had a date.

We had been planning the event since May, so it was a very exciting evening for us. It was our third Indigo Girls concert, the first being at the Greek in Berkeley in the summer of 1996 and the second was at the Wiltern Theater in L.A. in 2000 (I think spring). Of course this was the first concert where we have had to hire a babysitter and pay as much for the babysitting as we did for the tickets! Good thing it was our birthday splurge!

The Wolf Trap is an amazing venue with nice pavilion seating (seats under a roof) and a huge lawn (where we spread out!). It is the National Amphitheater, so it is also considered a National Park. You can bring all your own food and drinks in, including alcoholic beverages. It was pretty impressive looking at some of the spreads the people had around us (including a woman mixing margaritas in front of us!).

The concert did not disappoint! The set list was well-rounded and included all of my favorite concert hits, plus some songs off their newer album. The opening act was Girlyman, and they were great, too. It was an absolutely beautiful night under the sky and lightning (no stars, but no rain, either!).

I was introduced to the Indigo Girls' music my freshman year of college by two (oh so wise and experienced) girls on my floor. They were juniors, had just spent the semester abroad, and had gone to a concert while out of the country. Totally amazing that while attending a conservative Christian University, I would get introduced to a lesbian rock/folk group that is so politically active (read... very left). Of course my politics have progressively moved that way over the years, and I have always appreciated the great things Amy and Emily are doing and the things they stand for. And their music... so insightful and singable!
